Apocalyptic weather is raging through Europe now, with heavy flooding in Romania, Switzerland and Bavaria, whilst endless drought has sparked off the fires blazing across Portugal. An apocalypse is all about revelation and judgment, and a widespread strand of instant judgment in the western media tells us, quite unscientifically, that man's responsibility for global warming is to blame. Another strand, equally self-confident and even more brazenly unscientific, sees the hand of a vengeful Deity at work. Neither explanation appeals to this blog. At least al-Jazeera can be relied on to give an impartial, fact-based account.
